Cost Accounting Jobs

Cost accounting is an internal accounting style of system that locates and measures costs of products and services made by a company. Because cost accounting is much more of an internal operation, the requirements for the job or position are usually different from those of a common or regular staff accountant. While public accounting experience may be very helpful, companies generally focus on the specific or detailed cost analysis skills of potential candidates.

Cost accounting consists of 2 main parts: variable costs and fixed costs. Variable costs depend on the number of items or units produced and fixed costs do not depend on the manufacturing procedures and activity. There are 2 main types of cost accounting: job order costing, where each unit or item made is broken down as a single job and all costs are tracked per job, and process costing, where units or items made are broken down by process and each job has costs allocated by its process.

The job descriptions for cost accountants can be very distinct or specific based on the producing or manufacturing process of the hiring company. A sample of cost accounting duties: reviewing and creating the controls needed for info and data accumulation and reporting systems; updating bill of common material standard costs; checking and reporting on break-even points by unit products, work centers and plant factories; reporting on margins by divisions and product; reporting on periodic variances and their main cause; analyzing capital budgeting requests; performing cost accumulation tasks as a member of the target costing group; and accumulating and applying overhead costs as required by generally accepted accounting principles

Primary Responsibilities of a Cost accountant: The Cost Accountant performs moves and activities covering production and materials costs, costs of sales, product improvement and development, overhead, etc. The Cost Accountant compares actual costs to some estimates and analyzes their variances. The Cost Accountant check analyzes and monitors raw material inventory. The Cost Accountant checks and analyzes actual manufacturing costs and prepares some periodic reports comparing budget costs to actual production costs; this also includes product margin analysis and reporting. The Cost Accountant must have a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting plus 3 or more years experience working in the field of accounting.

When a student is revising for their exams it can seem like the stress is never ending. However, when examinations have been successfully completed a student can apply for cost accountant careers.
